Abstract Mantelpiece

This project started when I found a red oak board with this massive cathedral grain in the $5 offcuts rack at my local lumber mill. Resawing the board proved very difficult as it had huge internal stresses. In the middle of the cut the wood pinched the band saw blade and required driving wedges into the end to release it. Unsurprisingly, each board turned into a potato chip after the operation. Some bad tear-out when planing required either shortening the project or covering it up. All of these issues resulted in a happy surprise as I’ve always been really pleased with the final piece.
